Klas is a high performance bio-composite material used mostly in instrument making. Its accoustic qualities are comparable to the best species of wood, such as maple, walnut, ash, mahogany, ... however it outperforms wood in terms of stability, due to its composite design, by method of infusion.
K.L.A.S., which stands for Kopo Linen Acoustic Solution (Kopo Lin Acoustique Solution), was designed with eco-responsibility in mind for the preservation of our wood resources. Its main compound is flax fiber, which today offers multiple applications making it an alternative to composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon.
Linen is already emerging as one of the materials of the future, in the sports industry in particular and in design crafts to name a few.
Ever conscious of ecological issues, Kopo sources flax fabric from one of the most renowned French producers, based in Normandy, which collects locally and transforms flax into multiple fabrics for composite uses.
Why KLAS ?
An instrument designed and conceived using composites where possible offers ergonomic advantages, for the body of the instrument in particular, which can thus offer a unique comfort thanks to sleek and rounded forms, very difficult to have with wood.
Predecessors such as the famous Ovation brand understood this, but some improvements remained still to be made, particularly in the stability of the instrument when playing seated. But as it turns out, other advantages of KLAS have shown themselves over the course of the R&D process : mechanical stability, better wear and impact resistance, (stability over time, impact resistance) and an acoustic color as rich and warm as many of the woods currently used for acoustic guitar cases.
The Klas design by KOPO
Klas was conceived in the Kopo luthier workshop, in 2017 when the first tests were carried out, following an advanced comparative mechanical study. The optimal density and flexibility criteria were discovered determining the composition of the first guitar cases then produced. The eco-composites using flax fiber show a behavior comparable to that of wood thanks to the flexibility of the linen material, more organic than glass or carbon. The combination of various types of fabric is necessary, and the partial use of other materials such as basalt and hemp have proven positive.
Numerous tests have been carried out since 2017, with around twenty prototypes produced using varying proportions of fabrics each with it's unique KLAS composition.
The final result combines all the qualities required to satisfy a demanding instrument maker and those who appreciate what he makes.
The experience of KOPO
Frédéric PONS experienced instrument maker (Atelier Kopo founded in 1988 in Rennes), well recognized by his peers and chairman of the APLG since its foundation, has long since been concerned with the future of his trade due to the use of different species of wood. In search of lasting and efficient solutions, he began to take an interest in composites from the 90s, carrying out numerous experiments, with carbon fiber in particular. Then with his progressive choice from the 2000s onward to favor non-tropical woods has distinguished his instrument making practice.
Thanks to the meeting with the nautical world (quite natural in Brittany) Frédéric Pons came to understand the ecological and mechanical need for a shift towards the eco-composites based on flax and hemp already used in this field. Linen fiber guitar cases!
